Damascus covers an area of 221.2 sq. miles (573 square Km) and is estimated to have a population of 6.5 million people being the capital and largest city of Syria. The city is a governorate by itself, and the capital of the governorate of Rif Dimashq.

Souk Al Hamidiyeh

The Souk Al Hamidiyeh is the largest and most famous marketplace in Damascus and dates back to 1863. The souk stretches for 600 metres and is arched over with a high iron vaulted roof that was added in 1911. The market is renowned for Damascene textiles, antiques, women’s clothing and jewellery. Chessboards and inlaid mosaic boxes are popular souvenirs.
